# Payment Gateway Comparison: KPay, Stripe Direct & Stripe Connect

## Overview

Organizers can choose from three payment gateways on EventX:

* **KPay** — Best for Hong Kong-focused events with competitive local payment method pricing and self-service payouts
* **Stripe Direct (EventX Payment Gateway)** — EventX-managed Stripe integration with competitive flat pricing and multi-currency support
* **Stripe Connect (Your Own Stripe Account)** — Connect your own Stripe account for full control over payouts, refunds, and reporting

## 1. KPay (Recommended for HK-Focused Events)

KPay provides a more localized and efficient payment option for organizers.

### Why KPay

1. More competitive gateway pricing for local payment methods (such as PayMe and FPS) compared to international payment gateways
2. Simpler and more flexible payout requests through a self-service flow within the EventX portal
3. Better aligned with local attendee payment preferences, helping improve checkout success

### Self-service Payout Request

Organizers can submit payout requests for KPay payments directly through the EventX portal.

1. Go to the **Payout Request** module and fill in your bank details.
2. Review your **Available Balance**.
3. Submit a **New Request**.
4. Track the request through these statuses:
   * **Requested**: submitted and waiting for finance review
   * **In Transit**: approved and transfer is being arranged
   * **Paid**: payout completed

### Remarks

1. Only HKD is supported as the currency.
2. Organizers can toggle on KPay even if Stripe has previously been used for the same event.
3. Organizers can only select either KPay or Stripe as the payment gateway. We do not support selecting both at the same time.

## 2. Stripe Direct (EventX Payment Gateway)

Applies to accounts created after **November 1, 2024**. Existing accounts — contact your Account Manager to upgrade.

> **EventX offers 0.5% cheaper than standard Stripe pricing.** Standard Stripe Pricing: **3.4% + HKD 2.35** per successful domestic card charge. **Stripe Direct: 2.9% + HKD 2.2** per successful domestic card charge.

Stripe Direct operates in the Hong Kong region. If your organization is located outside of Hong Kong, such as in Singapore, you may not be eligible for this offer because there is a 1% additional fee for non-domestic cards.

### Supported Currencies

We support the following currencies for credit card payments:

AUD, CNY, HKD, IDR, JPY, KRW, MYR, PHP, SGD, THB, TWD, USD, VND

All above currency supported credit cards.

* **WeChat Pay China Wallet** — Uses CNY. Designed for Mainland China residents. Broader merchant acceptance, stricter setup for non-residents.
* **WeChat Pay Hong Kong Wallet** — Uses HKD. Tailored for Hong Kong residents. Optimized for local and cross-border payments in Mainland China and Macau without a Mainland bank account.

### Requesting a Payout

Refer to [Request Event Ticketing Payout](https://eventx-hq.gitbook.io/knowledge-base/registration-and-ticketing/order-and-finance/request-event-ticketing-payout) for payout instructions.

For Stripe Direct orders placed before **June 22, 2026, 1:00 PM (UTC+8)**, payout should continue to follow the legacy manual finance process.

## 3. Stripe Connect (Your Own Stripe Account)

There will be no additional fee charged by EventX if you connect your own Stripe Account for your event.

### Prerequisites

1. A registered EventX organizer account
2. A Stripe account — register at <https://dashboard.stripe.com/register>

### Pricing

Stripe pricing varies by country. Check your region's pricing page (e.g. [Hong Kong pricing](https://stripe.com/en-hk/pricing)).

### How to Connect

| **1.** Go to **Payment Method** and click **Connect Stripe Account**.                                     | **2.** Select an existing Stripe account or create a new one.                     |

### Refunds

* Use **Order List** or **Balance Ledger** on EventX to initiate refunds for supported online orders.
* Current product behavior supports **full-order refunds only** — **partial refunds are not supported**.
* Refund settlement and available funds are managed by your connected Stripe account.
* Depending on your fee schedule, **Stripe's processing fees from the original transaction will not be returned**.

### Payout

Control the **payout schedule** and **bank account destination** in the Stripe settings page.

### For Events with Approval Mechanism On

1. If you reject an attendee, the payment is **not automatically refunded**.
2. Use **Order List** or **Balance Ledger** to initiate a refund for supported online orders.
3. No "on-hold" system exists — the attendee is charged at registration even if approval is pending.
4. Stripe processing fees are **not refunded** even when an attendee is rejected.

## Refund

When a KPay or Stripe order is refunded, the financial breakdown is as follows:

* Refund Availability: Refund is currently supported for **KPay**, **Stripe Direct (EventX Payment Gateway)**, and **Stripe Connect (Your Own Stripe Account)**.
* Attendee Refund: The attendee receives a full refund of the original order amount (e.g., if the order was $100, the attendee is refunded $100).
* Organiser Fees: The original transaction fee is non-refundable and will still be charged to the organiser.
* Refund Scope: EventX supports **full-order refunds only** — **partial refunds are not supported**.
* Refund Gate: For **KPay** and **Stripe Direct**, the refund request must not exceed the event's Current Balance. For **Stripe Connect**, refund settlement depends on your connected Stripe account.
* To minimize refund failures caused by insufficient funds following payment settlements, it is highly recommended to initiate **KPay refunds** between 16:00 and 24:00 HKT.

## Important Notes

* **Non-domestic card surcharge:** Stripe Direct operates in Hong Kong. There is a **1% additional fee** for non-domestic cards. Organizations outside Hong Kong (e.g. Singapore) may not be eligible for Stripe Direct pricing.
* **Alipay restrictions (Stripe Direct):** Only supports Alipay China Wallet with China ID (real-name verification). AlipayHK Wallet is **not supported**.
* **Refund fees:** Stripe processing fees from the original transaction are **not returned** on refunds. Consult the [Stripe refund fee policy](https://support.stripe.com/questions/understanding-fees-for-refunded-payments) for your region.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Q: Which payment gateway should I choose?

**A:** KPay for HK-focused events (supports PayMe/FPS, HKD only). Stripe Direct for most events (13 currencies, EventX-managed). Stripe Connect if you have your own Stripe account and want full payout/reporting control. See the comparison table above for details.

### Q: Are there additional fees for non-HK cards on Stripe Direct?

**A:** Yes. Stripe Direct operates in Hong Kong, so there is a 1% additional surcharge for non-domestic cards.

### Q: Can I accept Alipay/WeChat Pay?

**A:** Alipay China Wallet (with real-name verification) is supported on Stripe Direct. AlipayHK Wallet and WeChat Pay are NOT supported.
